DJI MAVIC 2 – we know almost everything about new DJI DRONES

DJI puts off the premiere of new devices (which is supposedly caused by the detection of a technical problem in the drone, but perhaps it is just a rumor) that we already know a lot about the new drone in the network. Everything happened after the offer appeared on DJI MAVIC 2 PRO and DJI MAVIC 2 ZOOM in promotional materials of one of the largest ARGOS stores.

Argos is a commercial company that dominates the market in the UK and Ireland, dealing in the sale of household and electronic goods. It is in the newest catalog of this company that a promotional page dedicated to the DJI company’s offer appeared on which we will find, among others information about 2 new DJI drones.

DJI Mavic 2 Zoom and Dji Mavic 2 Pro. The company does not reveal the price of devices, but only briefly describes the advantages of new devices. The catalog is available once every few months, which means that the premiere of new devices (at least according to ARGOS) should take place any day.

Although we are in the middle of the holiday period, DJI is in no hurry, and the new dji DJI MAVIC 2 will appear at the end of August or early September. It’s just guesses. DJI has not officially announced any new release date for its toys.

The popular drone manufacturer has presented two new devices characterized by very interesting features: DJI Mavic 2 Pro with a 1-inch CMOS sensor Hasselblad and DJI Mavic 2 Zoom with a variable focal length lens 24-48 mm and the effect of „Dolly Zoom” just as it can release a few a week ago, the drone Parrot Anafi.

The new DJI Mavic 2 drone will be made available in two variants described above:

  • DJI Mavic 2 Pro with 1-inch Hasselblad CMOS sensor
  • DJI Mavic 2 Zoom with 2x optical zoom (24mm – 48mm)

1 inch transducers, or matrices so far, were available only for the DJI Phantom 4 series. The introduction of such a sensor size for DJI MAVIC 2 is definitely a step in the right direction. It is worth remembering that, unlike the Phantom series, Mavic is a „pocket” or knapsack drone, so folded and much lighter than its older brothers. It is possible that after this treatment the Phantom series will be completely excluded from the manufacturer’s offer or updated, including for much more powerful batteries, so as to continue to compete with the MAVIC series, but give a much greater room to be seen, remaining behind their older brothers, such as the INSPIRE model.

If you look at it through what I wrote, it is unrealistic for the zoom to have a 1 inch matrix, I bet that the PRO version will be more expensive than the Phantom PRO, and the ZOOM version will approach the price of the first version of Mavic Pro.

Because in this way ZOOM will be better than PRO, PRO 2 will be better than PRO 1 and ZOOM, PHANTOM 4 PRO v.2 still needs to offer something more, but it will not do it if MAVICPRO 2 comes.

Owners of PHANTOM PRO will therefore have sufficient reason to change the equipment – great matrix and smaller size. And MAVIC PRO owners will change to MAVIC PRO 2 because they want to have more, longer, faster and better.

AIR will remain a low-cost multi-tasking drone, and PHANTOM 4 in a version other than PRO and PRO v2 will not matter.

The second version of the drone, so DJI MAVIC 2 ZOOM puts the optical zoom in the range of 24 to 48 mm. This is a sufficient focal length to get very interesting effects, such as DOLLY ZOOM, but first of all a great option to increase the possibilities of even more interesting frames in the CINEMATIC scheme and more.

You can see that the movie mode will come to a whole new level. It is difficult, however, from the published information to read whether the drone will also have 1 intentional sensor. If this happened, even if it was the same sensor as in the Phantom series, it would be a big step forward and a tasty morsel for Phantom owners who would have two strong arguments to change into a new device: size and portability and optical zoom .

As for one thing, we can be sure, in both cases DJI wants to present the same parameters and new products:

  • faster: top speed 45 mph (72 km / h) vs. 40 mph (64 km / h) for the original Mavic Pro
  • longer flight time: 31-minute flight time vs. 27 minutes for the original Mavic Pro
  • OcuSync 1080p video transmission for distances up to 5 miles
  • Omni-directional obstacle detection using APAS
  • Active Track 2.0
  • Dolly Zoom (only zoom version)

OcuSync 1080p means in practice that both models will be able to send live 1080p movies up to five miles. It is worth mentioning that this is not only about the transmission itself, but also its quality (1080p) and the stability of the video connection. OcuSync is a system that allows you to view video in an environment with strong radio interference.

One of the new features will be to equip each of the drones with 360-degree obstacle sensing, which are part of the Advanced DJI Assisted Assistance Systems (APAS). Such a system has so far been available only in the DJI Phantom 4 PRO and DJI Phantom 4 PRO v.2.0 models. At the moment, however, the parameters of the new collision avoidance system are not known, although it will probably be an updated version known from the already available models.

The update will also pass the object tracking system – Active Track 2.0, which indicates that this mode is very popular among users.

31 minutes of flight, high-quality video, new tracking mode and a new obstacle detection system – this is not a novelty that can bring us even more amateur recordings showing even sports performances in the following months.

It is worth recalling, however, that the holiday leaks also brought up considerations about the gimbal itself and the possibility of its dismantling. Unfortunately, the ARGOS catalog does not reveal any details, but if it was possible to buy one of the above models, buy a gimbal and a camera from the second model without investing in two drones, surely such a solution would be found by many buyers. In this way, a compact drone would become a powerful tool for video recording and taking photos.

At the same time, with the appearance of new dji photos DJI MAVIC 2 PRO and ZOOM in the ARGOS catalog, a photo of something that was named by DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Edition leaked into the network (via the DJI – German language version). Although the drone in itself is no different from what we find in the ARGOS catalog, the name indicates that it will probably be one of the variants of DJI MAVIC 2.

The picture indicates a version of ZOOM, but the drone is marked with different colors than the two models described above. A similar procedure we had in the case of DJI MAVIC PRO and PRO PLATINIUM, where seemingly similar looking drones differ in flight time and used engines. The photo also reveals the complete appearance of the new drone from DJI.

We still do not know the details of image quality, but here we can sleep peacefully. 4k is a standard, and 60 FPS has been available for a long time in the Phantom series. It remains possible to enter 60 FPS without crop, as can be seen, for example, in the AIR model.

However, it is very likely that one thing should be noted: the DJI Mavic 2 Pro is to be available with the Hasselbl’s 1-inch CMOS sensor, while the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom with 2-fold optical zoom (24mm – 48mm). At the latter there is no mention (which in the catalog is only scored with the 2 PRO version) so that the ZOOM version also had a 1-inch transmitter. And I am more confident that it will not be it, and in return either we will get a 1 inch transducer known from PHANTOM or a 1 / 2.3 „CMOS sensor.

Why? These are only my guesses but it is worth paying attention to two issues – optical zoom with this type of matrix and in such small cameras, simply does not occur. It is often compensated by digital zoom or using two lenses. Introducing the zoom to the drone, with such dimensions of the entire mechanism of the camera, would be something crucial and would mean the use of additional engines but also the technology that ensures the correct operation of the mechanism. Of course, all this is a stretched theory that has its final in reality …

… that is, the second issue is the fact that even if companies decide to zoom in some devices, this is usually done at the expense of the size of the sensor and density of pixels. For example, matrixes of mobile phones are able to handle 20 million pixels without any problem, but for example the Hasselblad modules for Motorola Moto Z shows that 1 / 2.3 ” CMOS sensor has been used here, 12 million pixels to enter the optical zoom.

Therefore, in this matter, I’m afraid that the photo / video fans will have to choose another better matrix or zoom again. Otherwise, the version 2 PRO would not be valid unless with a much wider angle of view. Impossible. An exception may be a situation in which DJI will be tempted to introduce options for interchangeable cameras (camera + gimbal or other variation).
